Thoughts While Shaving: Conventional Wisdom Goes Against O’Donnell but These Are Not Conventional Times…Pappas for Mayor.

     Feast of St. Robert Bellarmine*

                                      Let This Octogenarian Speak.
Conventional political wisdom argues persuasively that Christine O’Donnell cannot be elected.  But as one who has seen conventional wisdom change at least three times in the eras ushering in cataclysmic change I think the stars are in alignment for the little lady. Moreover all the GOP establishment can do to diss her…and all the limp-eyed oh-so-sophisticated pundits can do…will help her.  The trouble with two of the best…Karl Rove and Charles Krauthammer…is that they are too young, wedded to conventional political wisdom that ruled since their young adulthood.   Neither one was brought up in extraordinarily economically difficult times akin to the Depression or disturbing times of war.
Take that from one who saw earthquake style convulsions in public attitudes from the Great Depression, World War II, Eisenhower’s setback at the Battle of the Bulge,  MacArthur’s defeat at the Yalu and this current mega-recession.  The only big Trembler they experienced was 9/11,  But unfortunately the rush to the churches was quickly abandoned.
Politics has changed dramatically since this recession—not that it would make a dent on people who live in Washington and are paid handsome salaries—by which I include Rove and Krauthammer.
Change hasn’t hit them yet. But the recession has done two major things. It has sent people back to God and the spiritual life. And it has convinced them the old liberal nostrums don’t work—and must be discarded by means of a peaceful revolution.  That’s why we have seen with Rand Paul trouncing Troy Grayson (Mitch McConnell’s favorite) in Kentucky.  Conventional wisdom then adopted the position: yeah but Paul can’t win.  Not so. He’s ahead of Dem nominee Jack Conway at this moment. As a matter of fact, only a few weeks after she was an unknown, O’Donnell is only 12 points under the Democratic favorite. She raised over $1 million on the Internet in one night following her nomination.
The New York Times, the Sun-Times and The Tribune keep up this drab pedantry that you have to be at least “a moderate” on social issues—read pro-abort, pro-gay rights, pro-embryonic stem cell—to be elected. Candidates who believe and testify to the exact opposite are leading in state after state: Angle one point over the Senate Majority Leader Reid for God’s sake…Rubio plus 14 of Charlie Crist and the Dem…Toomey up 8 over Sestak…Ayotte the new nominee in New Hampshire up 7, Boozman topping Lincoln in Arkansas by plus 17.
What is happening?  It’s the determining factor that Harold MacMillan used to describe politics years ago “events, my dear boy, events.”
Events happen: they come by themselves and not as result of what sagacious strategists decide.  Jim Farley was probably the outstanding political manager of his time.   But do you believe FDR couldn’t have been elected in the heart of the Depression without him in 1932?  Of course he could. Farley whom I interviewed shortly before his death when we lunched in New York at “21”  used his skill to win Roosevelt the nomination—but even he acknowledged the winning events were in place—for Roosevelt or anyone else. Other sages I knew well who were grouped around Eisenhower in 1952 were Len Hall, a master of masters and Jim Haggerty the astute press manager.  But do you think a 5-star general of the army who was a national hero couldn’t  have won that year against anybody?  Of course.  Events, my dear boy, events.
Karl Rove, the supposed wizard el Supremo is credited with electing George W. Bush. Every historian knows the Republican party nationally believes in primogeniture. Do you think Bush, the son of the 41st president, with his father’s rolodex won his victory in 2000 because of Rove? Of course.  He won because he had the bucks, the dough, the pedigree.  At that point in time, he was what the Republicans wanted.
And his reelection in 2004.    9/11 tied the country emotionally to Bush.  Do you think Karl Rove won the election of 2004 all alone by his super-seer self?  Of course not. It’s time to get over this arrant nonsense about campaign strategic wisdom. Like the old magicians who were called upon by ancient Kings to forecast what would happen.  It was then and is now  all baloney.  Do you think Lawrence O’Brien, a deep student of politics, won for Kennedy in 1960?  Of course not.  Kennedy won on the tube with his debates with Nixon—and neither Larry O’Donnell or Pierre Salinger or Kenny O’Donnell or Ted Sorensen had anything to do with it.
And let’s face it, he would not have won and Nixon would have, if Boss Daley didn’t pull out all the stops to defeat Ben Adamowski in the Cook county states’ attorney race which tipped the Illinois Dem vote oh so slightly.
        Events, my dear boy, events.
Now here are some events that precondition this coming midterm election.  (1) The people finally realize that if we spend like there’s no tomorrow…there will be no tomorrow.  That’s what propelled the Tea Party idea: no Republican party pol ever thought of it.  They were too busy weaseling and hedging, qualifying and parsing.
Then a guy named Rick Santelli, a trader, was interviewed on CNBC and expressed how outraged he was that he had to dig into his resources to pay for mortgages conferred on those whom the government knew couldn’t pay and wouldn’t pay and who benefited from the “compassion” of George W. Bush who outspent LBJ (hear that Karl Rove? I guess you’re not too eager to take credit for that one—you and Denny Hastert)  and others like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd.  It triggered the explosion.  Events, my dear boy.
With few exceptions, Tea Party’ers are more interested in cutting spending that getting over-involved in social issues…but The New York Timesyesterday had a bit of Upper Crust, East Side of Manhattan fun with O’Donnell.   First of all it agrees with Rove that since she has been late in paying her bills she is not representative of the citizens of Delaware and the United States.  Gee, if anything makes a bond with our hard-pressed citizenry it’s that.   You think that’s going to hurt her, NYT?  This shows how long you’ve been wrapped up in the Manhattan womb.  Second, she fudged on her resume. Lord, she’s in line to succeed the world’s greatest fudger of resumes…one who stole verbatim Neil Kinnock’s speech which showed conspicuous poor-mouth, saying he was the first of his family to go to college and that his grades in law school were unutterably high…a guy who got into a public spat on the stump with a heckler: Biden challenged him to compare his IQ with Biden’s.  And so far as his law degree is concerned, he was disqualified for cheating on the exam and had to take it over whereupon he passed.

Second, a great change has come over the American people from this mega recession and it takes one who has lived through other earthquakes to identify it. During the Great Depression, the churches…including my own Catholic one…was filled to overflowing not just on Sunday but for special services during the week: novenas to Our Lady of Perpetual Help…to Saint Jude, Patron of Lost Causes.  Frankly they were a more serious people, a frightened people, a greatly worried people.  The daily newspapers conveyed that seriousness.  There were no blazing sex stories as happened in the `20s as with the debaucheries of Fatty Arbuckle in Hollywood.
In the `40s the churches which had been filled for Masses and novenas filled again.  There was a new novena: Our Sorrowful Mother. So jam packed was the mother church of that novena that battalions of cops had to be detailed to the church every Friday night. The novena was broadcast weekly on radio. Also at that time, every Sunday afternoon we turned the radio dial to a measured, calm voice…an educated voice…delivering Christian philosophy with such power that it seemed like a university lecture.  But people couldn’t get enough of it or the orator—Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen.  You know what was featured on prime time on WGN as people got ready for work?  A guy called “The Gospel Singer” singing the old evangelical favorites.
Then came the `50s, the Korean War, the worries about our being engulfed with China.  On DuMont television again started a series “Life is Worth Living” with the same guy—then Bishop Fulton Sheen. His ratings topped those of Milton Berle—do you remember?  No?  Hear me, they did.
For a very short time…after 9/11…people returned to God again—but for a very short time. Now a religious reawakening is starting again in this country and it has to do with the fear that this country will go down.
That’s why all the sneering that The New York Times does, that Karl Rove does,, that the great Charles Krauthammer does, doesn’t affect Christine O’Donnell—but is a boost for her in reverse. .  And The New Yorker.  And NPR. It’s Comedy Time to laugh at her because she campaigned for sexual abstinence as a volunteer chairman.  Oh so funny. Why get a load of Jon Stewart smirking down his nose.  These snide reproves won’t do a thing.  They won’t because the American people are sick to death not just of wanton spending and liberal benefactions with our money. They’re sick to death with nihilistic, anti-religious laughter at serious things: in essence, cultural decadence spelled Lady Gaga.   Abortion is a serious thing; marriage is a serious thing. To Christine artificial contraception is a serious thing.  The biggest joke of all would be if she wins and gets the last laugh on east Manhattan, Katie Couric, Karl Rove and Krauthammer.
There’s one real reason why the big metropolitan papers like The Tribune and Sun-Times are fading out. They are relics of yesteryear. Deeply secular; not anti- but non-Christian…pro-abort, pro-gay marriage or civil unions. You’re out of step with the times, guys. Figure out why the Wall Street Journal is doing so well.  Why Fox is. Why CNN isn’t. Why CBS with Katie Couric isn’t. Why NBC with Brian Williams isn’t. Can’t you figure it out?
The Sun-Times has a key focus on only one sector of Chicagoans: blacks. They can’t get it through their university-educated heads that whites read too—studies show more than blacks, actually. The Tribune is a crazy-quilt of jumbled opinions on its editorial page—mostly Left due to its lovely Op Ed editor, Marcia Lythcott who has great experience with conservative issues having compiled the newspaper’s cook book.
All of us know why Charles Krauthammer isn’t warm on O’Donnell. He’s not interested whatsoever in what is developing as a religious revival in this country which she or Palin or Bachmann embody. But then Jews have never been hot to trot on religious revivals—at least not since the Romans destroyed the second Temple. It’s bred in their bones that religious revival means a pogram.   But as the times have changed, Christine…the very good pro-life, anti-gay rights, anti-embryonic stem cell Catholic…who is unashamed to betray her Catholic faith that others including Joe Biden have discarded, will get in because of the tremendous upsurge in this new religious fervor.  And after she gets elected and turns out to be a firm supporter of Israel, then Charlie Krauthammer will come around. Guaranteed.

                                       It’s Time for Pappas.
The wide-open primary for Chicago mayor presents a great chance for Maria Pappas.  No one I’ve met in Chicago politics has the brilliance and toughness combined to give this hidebound, Squid-encrusted city the scrubbing it needs—and believe me scrubbing with Grandma’s Lye Soap. She and I don’t agree on social issues but on the issue of a tough mayor who is needed today, we’re soul-mates.  If it helps her I’ll attack her but it wouldn’t do any good now that I’ve praised her so highly.  I think Tom Dart would likely be a fashion-plate mayor, young, slim-jawed like John Lindsay but not nearly tough enough.   In short, he’d be a softie.

*: St. Robert Bellarmine [1542-1621]. He was Jesuit, archbishop of Capus and cardinal; born in Tuscany he became skilled at languages, speaking Latin, Greek and Hebrew.  He played the violin and was superior in debates. He was ordained priest at Ghent, lectured on Aquinas at Louvain and wrote a Hebrew grammar. He wrote a defense of Catholic teachings that was banned in England but exulted in France. He became rector of the Roman College in 1592, then provincial of Naples, finally Cardinal in 1598. His moderate view on the temporal power of the papacy got him in dutch with Pope Sixtus V and may have delayed his canonization. But no matter, he was made a Doctor of the Church in 1930 and canonized in 1931.

Thoughts While Shaving: With Sneed, Irish Dem Spells Catholicism: it’s Sad….Then We Get to Capitol Fax.

Feast of Sts. Cornelius and Cyprian*

                                         Sneedless to Say…
It’s a symbol of how little her Catholic teaching means to Michael Sneed that she reports with Campfire Girl enthusiasm that White House national security council chief of staff Denis McDonough could well become the next White House chief of staff to succeed the purportedly retiring Rahm Emanuel.  Lord how Sneed raves on about (1) Obama and McDonough’s being  this/close to each other and (2) how good a Catholic McDonough is (two of his brothers are priests).
Sneed…a two-times married Irish Catholic…has an exasperating way of confusing Irishness with Catholicity.  She’s touched rhat “good Catholic McDonough” is adoringly close to his boss not withstanding that Obama as an Illinois senate Judiciary chairman was  the most hideous exemplar of abortion in the country, having voted to kill “Born Alive” which would provide nutrition and comfort to babies born from botched abortions.  When the U.S. Senate voted for it before Obama arrived, such pro-aborts as Barbara Boxer and Chuck Schumer supported “Born Alive.”  Not our  mystery president about whom the protective media have enveloped a cloak of secrecy—anyone seeking to penetrate is accused of “racism.”
To use her own expression, she’s as dumb as a box of rocks…dismissing Obama’s bloody record or forgetting it.  In fairness, she MIGHT WELL have forgotten it. Some years ago she offered happy birthday to former Gov. Dick Ogilvie who died five years earlier. Forgetting whether a memorable past governor is alive or dead was easily shrugged off by Sneed whose explanation was “my fingers were flying too fast.”

For her, Democratic Irishness spells Catholicism and she’s in denial about the reality.   The canon of absolutes taught the Church Fathers, refined by Ambrose, Augustine and Aquinas which validation from by Socrates, Plato and Aristotle and neglected in the debauch of Greece…absolutes that solidified with Christ and formed the West…are for her non-existent. Truth is relative; it is what works.  In today’s culture in the U. S., morals a lawless egalitarianism has descended with all slaves to their appetites…carnality, homosexuality, abortion…it’s whatever the market will bear. The Church was supposed to be the buffer zone but not so here institutionally.
With this pussy-footing archdiocese whose chancery is on best terms with The Squid, it is easy for Catholic lawmaker  pro-aborts…many Dems but don’t forget Tugboat Annie Topinka… to march up to the communion rail and receive the Eucharist despite the fact that as supporters of abortion rights the Church postulates they are in mortal sin which bans reception of the Body and Blood of Christ. That includes Daley, Quinn, Durbin, Lisa Madigan and almost all the  Catholic members of The Squid including aldermen, members of the legislature, congressmen, almost all seekers of the mayoralty et al.   Because the Church here is so silent about absolutes, it’s understandable that Sneed forgets this on occasion when her fingers are flying too fast.
It’s a good bet that Sneed never gives a thought about the Dem pro-aborts’ regular performance of sacrilege as she prepares her daily concoction of gossip which contains phrases like “the upshot”…the “backshot”…the “overshot”…the “buckshot.”  She’s 66.  Someday she’ll wonder why she ever thought this was worth it.
                                 The Capitolfaxblog.com
The Capitolfaxblog.com is comprehensive and not to be missed…but it is also true that it is an indentured foot-soldier of liberalism and apologist of abortion, gay lifestyle and all it involves.  It has superb political connections with the Left and sits at the table with the lefty secular Big Foot journalists including Apassionata van Leftward the everlasting Girl Scout college girl `60s relic, Carol Marin, the one woman oligarchy.  You’d imagine a town as big as Chicago would be able to different commentators—even if they have to echo the same liberal gruel. Not here.  Marin is with The Chicago Sun-Times, NBC Channel 5 and WTTW-TV the public TV station.
.  There is only one sizable independent voice among all of Chicago writers on public affairs print, radio and TV and that is John Kass of the Tribune.  For the past few issues, The Capitol Fax has been laying into Kass—highly unprofessional because it accuses him of “making things up.”  This of course it does not document. When it says that Kass makes up stuff and has no proof it crosses the line from journalistic competition to a hate-rag reflecting the sources with which it breathes in unison, the Madigans and the Daleys.  Its continuing campaign against Kass is a scurrilous hit-and-run job.   How did the legend grow that CFB knows more about politics here than anyone else? What stories did it break? None I know of. It’s written in a semi ungrammatical style about which it is impossible to ascertain whether it’s just sloppyness or done purposely for effect.
Capitol Fax is a to-the-death opponent of conservative social issues and so reporting on State Sen. James Meeks it says that if he runs for mayor he will be wounded by adversarial negative research…pointing out that—gasp—he is pro-life and anti-gay rights: two central teachings of Judeo Christian traditional theology…not that Capitol Fax knows or cares about these tenets, it’s main preoccupation being its substitute for absolutes: the well-being of liberalism and the Democratic party. It’s fallen behind in its research however. This country is on the cusp of revolutionary change at the ballot box and CPB continues on the supposition that there will be no change from the vise-like control of its Dem drinking buddies.

*: Saints Cornelius & Cyprian [circa 253].  The Church had no pope for 14 months after the martyrdom of St. Fabian in the bloodiest persecution it has seen to-date. During that time it was governed by a small conclave of priests.  Finally, Cyprian said that Cornelius was elected Pope.  His biggest problem was that of the sacrament of penance and the readmission of Catholics who in weakness under persecution had denied their Church. The two who were once friends took opposite stands on the issue.
Cyprian, the primate of Africa, said that the sinners could only be welcomed back by the respective bishops.  Cornelius believed that the apostates could be welcomed back with the usual sacrament of confession and repentance. Then there arose a challenger to Cornelius, the first of the so-called “anti-Popes” who got himself consecrated as bishop of Rome—a priest named Novatian who maintained that the Church did not have the power to reconcile apostates but also those guilty of murder, fornication, adultery and second marriage. The statement was ridiculous and Cornelius won most of the bishops and triumphed.  He died soon after. A census showed that Catholicism was composed of 46 priests, seven deacons, seven subdeacons and 50,000 congregants. Cornelius died of hardships after two years in the papacy.
Cyprian was a scholar, a great preacher and in the midst of another controversy this one involving a usurper of his bishropic named Novatus, died a martyr.

As This Octogenarian Prepares for Beddie-Bye, It’s Good News—So Far…A First-Hand Review of Likely Mayoral Candidates.

                                     O’Donnell in Delaware.
The entire Tea Party episode has defied conventional wisdom and now it is no surprise that crepe-hangers are saying that Christine O’Donnell is sure to lose Joe Biden’s Delaware Senate seat.  Throughout this entire unconventional mid-term congressional season, the nay-sayers were consigning Tea Party’ers to the tomb.  That continues after her nomination but if she’s nuts, let me tell you it would be no change for the person who fills Biden’s shoes. He’s been regarded as a 14 carat eccentric for years…something the media have always been cautious about conceding. So if we get a nut with her, at least she’s our kind of nut…pro-life, anti-gay rights, heavily anti-spending, heavily pro-tax cuts.
                            Good Mayoral Candidates and Lemons.
If you’re going to tell me that Rahm Emanuel is a shoo-in for the runoff, let me tell you… that what we’ve got through in Chicago…from the two Daleys, Jane Byrne, Harold Washington, the Council 21 vs. the 29 headed by Eddie Vrdolyak…has been a warm-up producing a light sweat preparatory for the real thing. Emanuel is a first-class sleaze, a cynical and duplicitous con  who will lead the city as did Jimmy Walker New York city in the mid-`20s, with verve but also as a first-class mayoral rogue.  I would expect that all of the old stories will be recycled—the city Water Department’s role in electing him to the House…the chicken head found in the bed covers of an enemy…the mysterious trip to Africa before Obama’s inauguration…the vote-buying in the Senate to pass ObamaCare.  No, tell me it can’t happen.
But mark my words, he is smart.  So the city will get a first-class manager but a guy with as much charm as…let’s see…Neil Steinberg.
The absolute worst pick is a tie—Carol Mosley Braun who was an incompetent but also a cold-hearted daughter who ignored her ailing mother when she was in the Senate…somebody who disappeared from view before her inauguration with a guy she called “my knight in shining armor.”  She’s tied with Little Looie the Weasel  a born demagogue who hit the pinnacle of his job performance skills when he was driving a cab.
About the best would be Tom Dart and Maria Pappas.  Both are superb administrators and dedicated public servants. Probably for requisite toughness…needed in the job now…would be Maria.
State Sen. and Rev. James Meeks might make the runoffs because he has a gazillion-member church.  He wouldn’t be bad if you put a time limit on his orations to the Council…Danny Davis would be wretched. For years he has been in love with the basso baritone of his own voice which negates substance…Jim Houlihan would be good but there’s something about him that emits a congenital weariness.  I don’t think he’ll do it…Bob Fioretti might be what the doctor ordered but it’s a great gamble…Ed Burke won’t do it. Too old…Terry Peterson, the head of the CTA would be better than most.  I don’t think the name will score well in the black community…Miguel del Valle would be a procrastinator and non-doer…Anita Alverez is very competent but won’t do it…Gerry Chico is overrated in almost all aspects…Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. would be severely handicapped by the Blago trial…his wife Sandi has not been an impressive alderman…
The best ones…better than this city has a right to expect…are Maria Pappas and Tom Dart.   The dead level worst would be Carol Mosley Braun and Little Looie.
It’s coming on to 10:30 p.m.  Nighty night.

Personal Asides: Boehner Gets Caught in a Trap but It’s Not Fatal…The New York Jets Should Sue Ines Sainz for Sexual Harassment.

Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.*

What is it About Nice Guys Finishing…?
House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) fell into a Democratic trap Sunday by agreeing as a last resort to a compromise on the Bush-era tax cut…saying he would vote to maintain lower tax rates for families earning under $250,000 if that was all he could get if President Obama and the Dems insist on ending the cuts for wealthier Americans.
It was not by happenstance that Boehner was led to make this mistake in an interview with an articulate decoy operated by the Obama administration in the guise of a journalist—Bob Schieffer of CBS.  DIGRESSION: Years ago, Schieffer   should have been fired for journalistic malpractice when he refused for an unconscionably long time to report on the extra-marital affair and illegitimate baby patronage of one of his closest friends, former Vice Presidential nominee John Edwards.  He said pompously  “Every politician has to face charges like this that aren’t true.I don’t listen to that trash.” You bet he would if it were about a conservative Republican.  END OF DIGRESSION.
In making that statement, Boehner left his congressional colleagues hanging out to dry. The argument should be: No tax hikes whatsoever.  His shilly-shallying about possible compromise before even legislation was introduced was the mark of uncertainty.  Boehner obviously wanted to protect the GOP from Obama rhetoric that the party would be willing to hold the middle class hostage in order to serve the wealthy.  But he should not have worried about that happening because Obama will do it anyhow.  And anyway, the fact that the president uses a lawmaker whom very few have heard of nationally to make his point further certifies that the Obama-Dem argument is impotent.
What Boehner should do is to announce that no matter what happens, if the Obama plan passes it should be without his support…and that once a Republican House is elected Boehner will introduce legislation to return to the original Bush tax cuts, indispensable as a tool to fight the recession.  Yesterday Boehner’s Senate leadership colleague, Mitch McConnell tried to close the gap by introducing legislation to return the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.  Boehner ought to stop worrying about the old-as-dirt class warfare argument Obama has resurrected from the `30s  which doesn’t work anymore.  Fretting about class warfare is a RINO compulsion and if Boehner got this advice from a staffer, he ought to fire him/her immediately.
One legit question that was asked last weekend to Boehner was about his tan.   Yes the question is legit.  A guy who makes the bar rounds, sits under a sun lamp for a tan and smokes incessantly—as Washington understands he does- is…apart from intellectual qualifications (which I don’t think last weekend elevated them)…a walking comparison with Dean Martin.
                                       Sexual Harassment Goes 2 Ways.
Purposely seductive personality Ines Sanz, representing Mexico’s TV Azteca, alleges she was humiliated by uncouth New York Jets football players when she invaded their dressing room to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez.  Women shouldn’t be allowed in all male dressing rooms anyway especially those who look and act like strippers.  How is it that women are allowed to expose maximum cleavage and wear revealing clothes in all male gatherings and then, when they protest that they are “humiliated” by whoops and slurs, threaten to sue on charges of sexual harassment? Of course it was just a bid for fame
Sexual harassment should go two ways. Jets should sue her on two grounds: sexual harassment and invasion of privacy.  Can any lawyers in this blog readership tell me…and others…if such a suit would be warranted?

*:The Exaltation of the Holy Cross. When Empress Helena the mother of Constantine went to Jerusalem in search of the cross on which Christ died, she had workers raze the Temple of Aphrodite which tradition said was built on the site of His crucifixion.  During the excavation workers found three crosses and legend maintains that to ascertain which one was right, Helena touched the one she believed was Christ’s to a dying woman who was healed.  She had the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher built on the spot and the date on which it was completed has been named as this feast.

Personal Asides: Clarification on Paid Monsignori…So It Looks Good for the GOP? Let It Watch Out for These Danger Signals that Caused the Collapse of 2006.

 Feast of St. John Chrysosatom*

                                        Clarification.
Susan Burrit of the Catholic archdiocese of Chicago emailed me to clarify the letter written by Fr. Thomas McQuaid to his congregation at St. Leonard’s in Berwyn carried in the Sun-Times article on 9/9 from ChicagoCatholicNews.com to-wit: There are no expenses involved in the Vatican creating Monsignoris other than $150 scrolls prepared for the designation in contradiction to what Fr. McQuaid wrote. So that settles that. I think reviving the domestic prelature of Monsignor is a good idea by the way but that’s not the point.
                                       The Generic Difference.
The news is good—almost too good to believe.   In state after state Republicans are leading in the polls.  And moreover, Tea Partyers are upsetting staid old establishment GOPers which presages a dramatic change in philosophy for the next Congress and a string of governorships.
In addition, the most amazing news involves generic party tracking. Gallup’s tracking poll that kept candidate’s names out of it and merely asks: “If the election were today, would you vote for a Democrat or Republican for Congress?”
Fifty-one percent of registered voters say they will vote for an unnamed Republican candidate for Congress this fall compared to 41% for the Democrat. That’s a 10-point lead, the biggest in history. It’s the fifth straight week Republicans have led Democrats in the generic.  Meaning that in most case, registered voters are inclined to vote for an unknown, Joe Doakes, over a Dem.
A second generic drastically slimmed the odds but the earlier Gallup was the biggest division in the 68 years the question has been asked. But now comes The Washington Post with a 13-point generic GOP lead. The best thing to do is to take this stuff with as grain of salt.  It may in fact be inflated…although the trend is underway for the party to control the House sometime soon.  The Senate?  Maybe—who knows?
Still, when Republicans had even a slightly smaller edge than the first poll predicted, in 1994, they produced a 54-seat swing that captured the House and a 7-seat swing that took the Senate. A New York Times prognosticator, Nate Silver, has through an ingeniously complicated series of arithmetical projections predicted that Dems in Illinois will lose Congresspersons  Halvorson (11th) Foster (14th).  He indicates the 10th, Kirk’s old seat, will go to Democrat Seals which I don’t believe and he sees a landslide for Democrat Hare over Bobby Schindler in the 17th which I don’t believe.  .
But lest you bask unduly in this generally good news, here are some rules to observe if…as  expected…the GOP takes over Congress.

Rule #1: Tea Party Tops Both Political Parties.  Don’t Diss It.
For God’s sake, don’t get the idea that the Republican party is popular. Both parties are desperately unpopular with the voting public—and the Tea Party dwarfs both in voter support. Which means: If Republicans goof up in Congress this time, they can easily become as hated as they were after Hoover left in 1931…through the `30s…half of the `40s until Roosevelt’s death.  With a brief interregnum in 1946 they allowed Harry Truman to make hash of them in `48.  Except they had a national hero named Eisenhower in `52.  No national hero appears possible in the future since the country is sour on heroes. Conclusion: If the Republicans dismiss the Tea Party consciousness for the old fashioned country club, they’re dead meat.
I know what Republican professionals are saying. They’re saying the Tea Party’ers are full of women who are fighting with themselves. Some of these women would rather fight than eat.  But understand these women also have the drive to get out the vote.
Important: Don’t confuse the Tea Party’ers with the old Moral Majority types that helped elect Reagan in `80.  You need those MM survivors too, undeniably.  But like all Gaul which Caesar divided into four parts, the GOP consists of (1) angry anti-Big Government types, anti-taxers (Tea Party’ers).  (2) Social conservatives, church-going people whom the Katie Courics of this world titter at.  (3) Business types including libertarians and here, yes, you include the country clubs and the chambers of commerce.  (4.) The independents…here today gone tomorrow types… who are propelled not so much by issues as events.
It was Harold MacMillan who at the height of his popularity as Prime Minister was asked if he ever thought things could turn sour for him.  He said yes indeed.  His question pursued it: “What could impel, say, your defeat, Prime Minister?”  His answer was immortal:
        “Events, my dear boy events.”
At that very moment although no one knew it, a certain beauteous courtesan, Christine Keeler,  was bedding down with his Secretary for War, John Profumo before she would bed down late-night with a Soviet spy.  Profumo denied his involvement to the full House of Commons but later had to apologize for lying.  He resigned and the MacMillan government came under severe attack. MacMillan could have staved off a vote of confidence except that at the same time he was given dire news by his doctor that his prostate cancer gave him only a few months to live.  He lived a long time after that—and in the fullness of health—at age  92 in 1986.
British history would have changed had the brilliant MacMillan not been given a wrong diagnosis for which the West can thank the incompetent British nationalized socialized health service doctors. Which again proved his statement right on the button:
         “Events, my dear boy, events!”
This is a given: the Republican party is highly unpopular as a party but the Democratic party is far worse.  That’s why you don’t dismiss any of the coalitions that brought victory.  And especially you don’t let victory go to your head.  As Rule 2 brings out.
             Rule #2:   Republicans--Don’t Get Cocky.
In 1994 Republicans took control of the both houses of Congress for the first time in 40 years—and the House made Newt Gingrich Speaker,  He was definitely not a “good old boy” like Bob Michel, his GOP predecessor who valued playing golf with Tip O’Neill at Burning Tree in order to get a few crumbs from the table.  Gingrich was a real revolutionary, in thought and action.    He had been a skilled insurgent infighter, an orator, a scholar, a former professor, having developed the genius idea of “The Contract with America” which gave congressional candidates the same general format on which to campaign.
But once Speaker, victory went to his head. The GOP Senate under Bob Dole as plodding, mediocre but the news was dominated by Newt and his rash cockyness. The media and the Dems…often the same…lay in wait. .
Brilliant, irascible, thin-skinned and highly unstable, Gingrich was the embodiment of Winston Churchill…and just like Churchill (as one member of the WWII war cabinet told me when I lectured at St. John’s College Oxford)…he was “50% genius and 50% nuts.”  “Our most formidable task,” he said, “was to sift through the chaff to wind the wheat.”   Oddly the same description of Newt was given to me years later off the record by Henry Hyde who said “he’s 50% genius and 50% nuts.”
As Speaker, he was on TV almost every day spouting ideas…many  imaginative…that were not checked with anyone—at least not with his fellow Republicans.  You turned on TV almost fearful of what he’d say.

For example, on “Meet the Press” one Sunday, he suddenly urged the nation to bring back orphanages as a far better substitute, if run correctly, than chaotic non-families.  He was right but he launched the idea before talking to his House Republicans. Liberals and the media charged purposefully wrongly that Newt was heralding a return to the Age of Charles Dickens with little Oliver Twists pulling their forelocks and holding their soup bowls aloft saying “Please sir, more?”
The idea was dropped suddenly.   Too bad because with proper safeguards children in a disciplined but loving environment can make out far better than in chaotic, fatherless households which lead them to find their “leadership” in gangs.
In the meantime, Newt was writing a book! Imagine! Notwithstanding that a previous Speaker…Jim Wright…wrote a book and used bulk purchases to evade the limitations of personal speaking honoraria which Newt capitalized on and secured the resignation of Jim Wright…now Newt was himself writing a book!  That he had the time for this puzzled many.  It backfired. No wonder liberals and the media charged Newt was a hypocrite.
…Following which Gingrich decided to do a DVD college course on government and get subscribers to take the course on a for-profit basis. This led the House Ethics committee to cite him with 81 separate counts of violations.  Later reduced to one, the Ethics Committee fined him $300,000 and issued a formal reprimand.
Next Newt resolved to bring Bill Clinton to account for spending too much, a good idea, Gingrich let most appropriations to run out and threatened to shut down the government while it ran day-by-day on a continuing resolution.   The nation was fascinated. It was to become a game of chicken between Newt and Clinton.  (Two baby boomers who had the same unstable childhoods: Clinton, born with a different name, having to deal with an alcoholic, abusive father and Newt as a kid changing his name to square with his mother’s second husband and bouncing all over the country as an army brat).
But Gingrich blew the game of Chicken by running his mouth to the press—a frequent occurrence for him.  He implied that among the reasons he was unhappy with Clinton and trying to shut down the government was that on the way back from Yitzvak Rabin’s funeral in Israel on Air Force One Gingrich and Dole were relegated to back seats!
That did it. The perceived pettiness of that admission undercut Gingrich’s role in trying to bring the Clinton administration to account for excessive spending. The blunder turned the country against Gingrich and Clinton won the game of chicken.  It was one of the worst mistakes of his career which Gingrich later admitted in a book Lessons Learned the Hard Way.
Nor was it his last mistake. The incredible, incredulous thing that next happened was the icing on the cake.  While blistering Clinton for his affair with Monica Lewinsky and leading the House to impeach him in 1998 for lying under oath, at the same time, Gingrich was conducting a secret extra-marital affair of his own and preparing to divorce Wife No. 2 to marry No. 3…his divorce announced to No. 1 while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery.  Wouldn’t you wonder what he was thinking of when he knew his own behavior was culpable?  Promptly Gingrich appeared  on evangelical Protestant radio shows to confess his sins.

This brazen half genius half nut is now preparing to run for president.  And wonder of wonders, he has become a Catholic after which he was invited to address a convention of Legatus…the group of CEO Catholics…trumpeting his conversion.    Small wonder  Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) has said Gingrich would be the last Republican he’d support.
Understandably after Republicans lost a good number of seats in successive elections, a group of leaders rightly blamed Gingrich and got him to resign…as Speaker and as House member (after which he formed a number of foundations and embarked on tours as a big-bucks honoraria speaker…and unburdened with administrative detail which was his bugaboo, became a bigger celebrity than ever).
The turmoil to succeed Gingrich bypassed Texans Dick Armey (retiring), Tom DeLay (probed by a prosecutor who later dropped the charge years later) and Bob Livingstone, (R-La.) Appropriations chairman.  Livingstone would have been an ideal Speaker but after being selected, he bowed out because he had been conducting a number of affairs including one with a female lobbyist.  His wife told him he must not only bow out but resign from the House, which he did.
This seemingly left only one man standing in the leadership—J. Dennis Hastert (R-Illinois), known to everybody as Good Old Denny. The idea that the Speakership had to devolve on Denny or nobody was fatuous.  There were many better choices—but the Bush White House and a group of Republican plotters decided on Denny.  There were many more desirable candidates around but unaccountably…maybe understandably because he was so malleable…they settled on Denny.
                    3. Don’t Dump Conservative Economic Principles.

Denny Hastert, a former restaurant fry cook and high school wrestling coach,  was actually for a time in a political science class I taught years ago at Loyola for teachers who wanted to broaden themselves.
He was likeable enough but a nonentity in my class as well as in the legislature and Congress.  He traded on the fact that his high school wrestling team was All-State.  And he had a fund of funny stories.  Often he’d move his lips as if he was on the verge of saying something memorable—but then would seemingly dismiss the idea. When he became Tom DeLay’s assistant as deputy Whip in the House he specialized in soothing hurt feelings that were caused by Delay’s brusque manner.
When a coterie of Republicans put him up for Speaker, they had checked with the White House. Everybody told him the heavy intellectual lifting would come from the White House. All Denny had to do was wield the gavel and obey orders.
That was perfectly okay with Denny—but that was the danger signal.  He was tabula raza. non-ideological, indecisive when confronted with big problems, who wanted to take no risks and imitate the time-tested machinations of careerists to keep the GOP in power.
It worked for a while—long enough for Hastert to attain the record of the longest-serving Republican Speaker (1999-2007).   But he was docile, listening to orders—from the “W” Bush White House and careerist House colleagues. Many of the careerists had the Illinois disease: pitch a big tent, give everybody something and avoid controversy.
Armed with that non-philosophy, they passed:
A massive education bill which expanded federal involvement in education, a failed attempt to get Ted Kennedy on board supporting vouchers but which in the end boosted spending and was stripped of almost all reform initiatives.  Republicans thought that would get them liberal teachers’ votes.  Didn’t work.
A farm bill that returned to subsidies, replacing the “Freedom to Farm” Act that had sought to return to free-market principles—this one creating new subsidies.  Republicans  thought that would get them more of the rural vote. Didn’t work.
A new prescription drug benefit sure to boost spending by $1 trillion over 10 years plus a mandate for mental health coverage due to drive up medical costs.   Republicans thought along with Bush it’d get them “compassionate liberal” votes.  Didn’t work.
All the while, they fell victim to deals with venal lobbyists like Jack Abramoff who went to jail for cutting deals with members and rewarding their floor votes with campaign contributions and paid up vacations.  Vacation trips were arranged by Abramoff where some GOP lawmakers were flown to posh vacation resorts, expenses paid by a make-do “foundation” grant where the congressmen were supposed to make speeches to justify the trips..but they were a front for recreation. Naturally, scandals ensued.  Not a word of condemnation seemed to come from the Speaker.
Then a bachelor Florida GOP congressman was recorded importuning a number of young male House pages.  Nothing happened but the importuning was captured on voice-mails and emails. Rather than reprimanding the congressman, House Republicans swept it under the rug until it became too late and his actions were blown up into a national scandal.  He didn’t lay a glove or a finger on any of the kids but the Democrats howled bloody murder…forgetting that one of their own—Barney Frank of Massachusetts—conducted an affair with a male prostitute who turned Frank’s condo into a bordello while Frank was at work.   But the GOP member’s emails and phone tapes to the young male page was the scandal of the era.
No wonder Republicans lost the House in 2006.
After Republicans lost the House, Hastert resigned from Congress rather than serving out his final term—in order to become a full-time lobbyist.  His vacancy forced hard-strapped Illinois to foot the bill for a special election (in which a Democrat was elected).
                            4. Stay Firm on Social Issues.
Understand this: Flaccidity and “Big Tent” temptations won’t seduce the Republicans on spending or taxes.  They have capitalized too much on the sins of the Democrats to let that happen.  But moving to embrace the “Big Tent” will likely turn on social issues.   Don’t count on Tea Party people per seto serve as a buffer against this.  It’s not their style as a group.
Invaluable as Tea Party people are, they are first and foremost concerned about spending and taxes and are not necessarily as involved in social issues as they are with fiscals (this is a generalization: Obviously some are).
But another segment of the voting electorate on which conservative victory turns has been and will continue to be church members, authenticist Catholics, evangelicals, strait-laced rural folks and seniors who are solidly pro-life and supporters of traditional marriage.

What will be the arguments from those who will seek to pitch the “Big Tent”? From the media engendered plea for public toleration via legislation, court decrees and ordinances of homosexual practice.  It has already come from the country clubs which “moderate” Republicans frequent. But also, shockingly, from some conservative leaders (see below).
And frankly it sounds so-so-so “civilized.”  After all, no one earlier or now prescribes treating homosexuals like lepers with a guy running ahead of them with a bell and shouting “Unclean!  Unclean!”  Gays maintaining their privacy have achieved much in public life since the founding of the republic. To list only one of many: Sumner Welles, FDR’s undersecretary of state who was married—and whom whether he was or not was incidental because of his great value as an anti-Soviet strategist in the State Department.  Regrettably Cordell Hull the secretary of state, jealous of his aide’s influence over Roosevelt, leaked a rumor that Welles was homosexual
But the professionally active “gay community” has decided to imitate the civil rights movement and has recruited not just media but brokers from the Right.  Just as there was a Rosa Parks and the Selma bridge, we are told that murder, suicide and social persecution wrack the civilization of the United States against gays.
So in order to cleanse themselves against bigotry, much of the country’s media pontificate espoused not just absence of violence but affirmative action for them. Illustrative nonsense: The Democratic party which invented the quota system has injected into state convention delegations the requirement that a certain number of delegates be gay.
That kind of nonsense goes like a dagger to the heart of traditional Judeo-Christian morality which cites that homosexual practice is strictly forbidden and rendered anathema in Revelation and Christian teaching. Again the mandate is not to abjure homosexuals but abstain from the false “toleration” that recognizes the practice as merely an acceptable alternative to heterosexual practice, no matter what Judeo Christian teaching for 5,000 years has been.
DIGRESSION: The most famous case of this nihilistic pragmatism in Illinois Republican circles is the non-gay Judy Baar Topinka who having switched from pro-life and anti-gay-practice toleration some years ago to riding as a celebrity and token Republican in Gay Pride parades as do a host of Democrats has been near-canonized by the professionally gay community.
DIGRESSION CONTINUED: The fact that she has gotten away with it without criticism from her party is due to the massive support for it from secular media.  She is running for Controller now, having been State Treasurer, GOP nominee for governor, state GOP chairman et al.  She affects a penny-pinching Tugboat Annie aura.  Penny-pinching she is with her own personal spending, she  is not so with the public purse. She’s been on the public payroll for decades, never missing a chance to draw a paycheck from the taxpayers: she’s now a fully paid member of the RTA. Starting from 1980 when she was elected to the state House, through state Senate, state Treasurer until today with the RTA that’s almost 30 straight years on the public payroll.  END OF DIGRESSION.

Topinka is a raucous exception to most Republican candidates. But the thing that concerns me is the number of prominent conservatives who are treating gay rights as almost inviolable, stemming from the false conclusion that gay-ness is an inherent condition, like the color of one’s eyes—having nothing to do with sin. In recent weeks alone, this kind of laxity and heresy within the conservative ranks has manifested itself in many important ways.   And it pains me to list them because they are invaluable in other ways to the conservative movement—not should they be discounted because of this one variance:
Ann Coulter is a stunning exemplar of conservatism including defense of life, witty, a wordsmith, vividly telegenic, a brilliant debater—but she is willing to speak to Republican “gay rights” supporters which underscores her recognition of their practices as justifiable.  It must mean a lot to her because when called to account for it, she becomes vehement. Rush Limbaugh saw nothing wrong with paying Elton John more than $1 million to entertain at his 4th wedding (well, that in itself tells you something, doesn’t it?)

Glenn Beck who has gained widespread conservative acceptance—and in my view justifiably—has said publicly that he sees nothing wrong with same-sex marriage.
Former GOP national chairman Ken Mehlman has formally announced that he is gay and is joining with other leaders to fund gay Republican activities.

The drive to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell” for military recruitment has picked up a good number of Republicans and is popular with media and in some affluent suburban country clubs.

And powerful Republican congressional leaders attended a recent fund-raiser for the gay-rights-supporting Log Cabin Republicans who include active homosexuals.  Leaders attending have non-gay voting records but they were there anyhow: Congressmen Pete Sessions (R-Texas), chairman of the GOP Congressional Campaign committee; Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), chairman of the GOP Senatorial Campaign Committee; Rep. Ilena Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.); Cong. Judy Biggert (R-Ill.) and Grover Norquist a leading conservative strategist.  The master of ceremonies was Tucker Carlson, a Fox News commentator.
And it’s not just the Big Tent. It takes in those who say that social issues should not be mentioned…as if it’s anathema…in campaigns. Look, I’m the first to say the big issue of 2010 is the deplorable state of federal spending, taxation etc.  But for candidates to dodge, bob and weave, stammer and bloviate trying to avoid the social issues is stupid and cowardly.  It’ll interest you to know that none other than Gov. Haley Barbour, chairman of the National Republican Governors’ Conference has taken this position: stay away from social issues whatever you do!  Mitch Daniels, the governor of Indiana and a potential candidate for president has urged that social issues be taken off the table by the next Republican president who says there should be only one focus of concentration: restoring the economy.
I ask you: how can social issues be taken off the table by the next Republican president?  How utterly stupid!  A Supreme Court vacancy comes up and what should the Republican president do: ignore a nominee’s social record?  What about embryonic stem cells?  Do we imagine that our liberal and Democratic friends will give us a pass on them?  Barbour and Daniels ought to be told straight from the shoulder: Your advice is cowardice, evasion and the counsel of duplicity.   It is also dishonest. No one mandates campaigning with social issues foremost any more than Reagan ran for president that way.  But to counsel making a deliberate effort to obfuscate one’s position on these issues is unworthy of the Republican party.

                                  The “Big Tent” Fallacy.
Inevitably whenever conservative Republicans win control of a seat of government there come forth from under the rocks the wispy sages who counsel that it is wise for them to “broaden the big tent”—i.e. adopt ideas antithetical to conservative principles.  The pro-life, pro-abort internecine battle for the GOP soul seems to have been won—at least temporarily—by the pro-life forces.  Hear me out: The next assault will come from inside the GOP from those who say social issues are of little or no concern, that we must be “tolerant,” that we must “adapt” and “accommodate” our gay friends because they vote too.  That’s the siren call of the Sage of Riverside: Judy Baar Topinka.
My advice to this generation of conservatives who rightly cheer their coming ascendancy in Congress is this: Watch out for the writhing, plotting serpent in the Garden who wriggles from under a rock and who will snicker and emit a forked tongue with the advice: “Com’on, let’s get with the 21st century! Compete for the gay vote and you’ll win forever!”

*: St. John Chrysostom [347-407].  Archbishop of Constantinople, born the son of an army officer and his wife at Antioch, he received the best education money could buy both in classics, scripture and law. He lived as a monk in a mountain community near the city and nearly ruined his health permanently through austerities and the damp conditions of his cave hermitage. Returning to Antioch he was ordained deacon(381) and served the church until he was ordained priest (386). He became the bishop’s assistant both for administering alms to the poor and spiritual instruction.
He became famous as a preacher and commentator on the Gospels of Matthew and John.  He gained political stature as well in 21 sermons delivered against the Emperor’s high taxes.  Times changed and a new Emperor requested that he become archbishop of Constantinople (in those days regrettably the Emperor’s sanction was required). Once archbishop, Chrysostom assailed the laxity and loose morals of the court. A jealous rival who had competed for the job of Constantinople archbishop, Theophilus, ran to the Empress and was instrumental in having Chrysostom accused of treason for calling her “Jezebel” and led a cabal of other bishops against him.
Theophilus took his charges to an Arian council at Antioch and Chrysostom was banished, exiled first to Cucusus in Armenia and then to Pontus where he died as result of travel in bad weather. Thirty years later his body was taken back to Constantinople.  In the West he is hailed as one of the Four Greek Doctors of the Church (with Anastasius, Basil and Gregory of Nazianzus) and is considered one of the premier doctors of the entire Church.

Personal Asides: Jockeying for Mayor is Kiss of Death for Quinn…Wha? Do Monsignori Titles Cost $5,000? Tell Me It’s Not So!

Feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentino*

                                              Poor Pat.
I almost feel sorry for Old Watery Eyes. Almost.  Daley’s announcement that he won’t run came at the very worst time for Pat Quinn. It means that the money normally coming from Chicago to finance the governor’s campaign has dried up as Big Labor, Big Business and liberal source harbor their funds for the Big Push…backing the right guy for mayor.
Quinn can justifiably say: Thanks a bunch, Rich.   That may be the deciding blow that finishes off Democratic control of the governorship. Not that Quinn isn’t capable of blowing it himself (he’s done an excellent job thus far).
                                             The Big News…
…about a Berwyn Catholic pastor blowing his top in a published letter to his congregation and dissing Cardinal George is not about the scattering of Monsignor titles for favored priests.  As a matter of fact, I think the return of Monsignors is a good idea.  That’s not the point.
The big news is that Fr. Thomas McQuaid of St. Leonard’s Church in Berwyn blew the lid off what I imagine is one of the Vatican’s deep-dark secrets… a secret those of us who inhabit the back pews had hoped disappeared from the Church in the bad-old Middle Ages (noted for sanctity but also some $$$ abuses).  In his letter to the faithful, Fr. McQuaid said this:
“Months ago I asked the Cardinal not to move forward with this plan calling it shameful in view of the economic situation we find ourselves in these days. You ask `Why is this an economic issue?’ It is `expected’ that a `gift’ be offered to the Vatican for each title conferred. In the past I think the `expected gift’ was around $5,000 each.  I suspect that now it is probably $8,000-$10,000 each—of course we will never know.  Again it’s your money!”  Emphasis mine.
Holy Smoke, Batman!  You mean this same-old, same-old digging in your purse to get a title conferred to worthy clerics is still in effect as it was when Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales?  This is only slightly different than what happened in the 17th century when my paternal forebears tilled the soil in Bavaria and looked up the hill at the prince-bishop who had been installed for reasons of clout!
This validates Bob Novak’s statement to me after he was received into the Church (and having read the unexpurgated Church history following Christ’s ascension):
“Tommy, the Church has got to be divine to have outlasted all the villains and just plain jerks through all the centuries!”
Fr, McQuaid was totally right about no answer from the chancery. The archdiocese told ChicagoCatholicNews.com (which deserves more than just a hat-tip) that the Vatican charged $150 for each scroll the new domestic prelates receive but as to whether there are other higher costs, no response as yet.  Not surprising.
The other stunner was that Fr. McQuaid cited the failure of  “the Cardinal, Bishop Rassas and Fr. Ed Grace [the former vicar for priests]  to have protected children from the abuse of Fr. Dan McCormack and the inestimable damage done to these young people and their families and the millions of dollars paid for the Archdiocese in settlements.”
In the Middle Ages a priest writer of such criticism might expect to be  hauled off and promoted to work in a Trappist scullery.  By the way, has anyone checked on Fr. McQuaid recently?  Is he still at St. Leonard’s?  Just asking.

St. Nicholas of Tolentino [1245-1306].  Born at Sant’Angelo, Pontano, Italy he was the son of parents who had been childless until middle-age and who prayed at the shrine of St. Nicolas of Myra to have a child who when born they named after the saint.  At the age of 18, Nicholas became an Augustinian friar, was later ordained and became a gifted preacher.  He gained prominence rapidly and served as a peacemaker in a country torn by strife between the Guelfs and Ghibellines who struggled for the control of Italy. He suffered greatly from illness but offered up his pain as mortification.  He was canonized by Pope Eugene IV in 1466.

Thoughts While Shaving: The Country Club Republicans Call Sharron Angle and Christine O’Donnell Loopy. Are They?

  Feast of  St. Peter Claver*

Thoughts While Shaving: Tony Blair Cribs Movie Script for His Autobiography!...The Country Club Republicans Call Sharron Angle and Christine O’Donnell Loopy.  Are They?
Tony, Tony What Shall We Do With You?
Drudge reveals today that Tony Blair’s autobiography uses an entirely fictional occurrence from a movie to dramatize his first meeting with the Queen.  In the movie “The Queen,” Elizabeth II greets her new prime minister and says that he is the 10th to serve in that post during her lifetime, the first being Sir Winston Churchill.   The writer of the film “The Queen” acknowledges that he made up her remark.
In his book, Blair relates the same story…obviously cribbed from the movie—although he denies having seen the film.
        Mark Kirk, take heart.
                           I:  Start Off With O’Donnell.
Bankrupt of arguments to defend their many disastrous stands on public policy, Barack Obama and his Democratic allies have resorted to a last desperate stand…calling their Republican adversaries mean, unfeeling, slavish to the rich.
That’s what Obama is doing with John Boehner…calling him unfeeling, uncompassionate, charging that he is holding middle class tax cuts hostage in order to get tax cuts for the rich.  By singling out Boehner, this highly unpopular president is doing the GOP House leader an inestimable benefit (by assailing private citizen Richard Nixon as “a chronic campaigner,” Lyndon Johnson boosted one who was called a sure loser to stature helping Nixon win the `68 nomination).  Usually personal attacks like this are done by vice presidents who are the hatchet-men for their administrations. But Obama doesn’t care.
In this campaign season, other  Democrats under siege call some of their Republican adversaries much worse; they say they’re loopy. And in primaries where Tea Party candidates are a threat, establishmentarian Republicans do the same thing…as they did with Scott Brown of Massachusetts and Joe Miller of Alaska.
Loopy: It’s a name not just Democrats play.  Establishmentarian Republican Mike Castle, the congressman-at-large in Delaware, is calling his Tea Party-supported adversary Christine O’Donnell nutty, loopy.
Let’s get this straight. At this desperate pass in our country’s history, I favor most Republicans over Democrats bar-almost none, believing that even when proven loopy, I’d take a loopy conservative Republican U.S. senator over a liberal Democrat whose disastrous liberal philosophy on the economy and national security is a threat to this nation.  That’s not to say Angle and O’Donnell are loopy…but even if they have eccentricities, in the present pass this country’s in, I gladly accept them.
I well remember a few members of Congress who definitively were loopy.  And they held important posts: Chairman of Senate Foreign Relations and Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee.
                               The Chairman’s Asleep.
Sen. Theodore Francis Green), Democrat of Rhode Island, was chairman of Senate Foreign Relations when I worked as a staffer in the House in 1957.  Teddy (as everybody called him behind his back) was born in 1867, two years after the end of the Civil War. In his 90th year he presided over some very important deliberations concerning the Cold War including the creation of the Marshall Plan, Truman’s Point 4 proposal and NATO. One day the secretary of state, John Foster Dulles, was testifying before Green’s committee when everybody noticed something.
The chairman was sound asleep. Everybody coughed and stirred but he didn’t awake.  A staffer then came to him and nudged him awake. Dulles continued but Green, cupping his hand over his ear, complained he couldn’t hear. They checked Dulles’ microphone which was working.  Finally the same staffer came up to him on the platform and adjusted his then cumbersome hearing aid, the 1950s variety with wires and batteries. It had run out of juice.
Old as he was and stone deaf as he was, Teddy Green was still sharp at 92 when he was persuaded to pack it in and not seek reelection in 1958.
Loopy?   Not in the slightest.   Nobody, not his Republican adversaries in Congress or Rhode Island, suggested that Teddy was loopy.
I remember a case that was even worse. I was a Quaker Oats lobbyist in the mid-`70s and was working on a bill involving cereal television commercials to kids.  The legislation was crafted in the Senate Commerce committee and had to be ratified by the House Ways and Means committee.
                                    “Hello, Orville?”
Sen. Warren Magnuson (D-Wash.) was chairman of the Senate Commerce committee. Slowly but surely he was falling victim to dementia. He was not all that old but it was getting apparent. What was also mystifying was that he had the strangest association with names…including people he had known for a long time.
Magnuson’s secretary was deputized to remind him constantly to make one important phone call…to Wilbur Mills (D-Ark.), chairman of Ways and Means concerning legislation my company and the entire cereal industry was interested in. She would come to him and say “Senator, can I call Chairman Mills for you now?”
He’d say what?  Who?  She’d say “Chairman Mills.”  Who?  “Wilbur Mills.”  Oh yes. Call him now.  She placed the call from his desk, saying “Sen. Magnuson is calling for Chairman Mills.”  She waited and handed the receiver to Magnuson, saying “Senator,  Chairman Wilbur Mills is on the line. Wilbur Mills!”
Magnuson took the receiver to his ear and said, “Orville?”
Afterward I asked her: “You were very clear to him that it was Wilbur Mills.  Why did he call him Orville?
Simple, she said.  The mind in dementia makes funny associations. The name Wilbur somehow made him think of Orville.  You know? Wilbur and Orville Wright!
Now Magnuson was loopy but for many years he was one of the savviest lawmakers in the Senate.   Washington state voters had no trouble reelecting him over and over until his doctors said “time’s up.”

Again: At this stage in our country’s history, I’d take a loopy conservative over any liberal Republican or any liberal Democrat.   Media, Democrats, liberal Republicans plus at least one major conservative source are condemning Tea Party’er Christine O’Donnell who is challenging incumbent GOP Congressman Mike Castle for the party’s senatorial nomination…saying she’s loopy.
The Great Masturbation Issue in Delaware.
O’Donnell has had a tough time paying her bills…rent, mortgage for which Mike Castle has criticized her—but if all the people in Delaware squeezed by the recession votes for her, she’s win by a tsunami.
Then they decided to really certify she is loopy.
Before she ran for the Senate, she conducted various seminars for her Catholic Church.  And as an authenticist Catholic had been quoted…get this:
        Masturbation is a sin.
Of course to modern secular ears that’s a laugh. Not to most Catholics.  And as an authenticist Catholic, O’Donnell is right.  She never entered the subject in her campaign but was quoted as saying this in church seminars when she was lecturing on abstinence and chastity,.
Mike Castle’s campaign had researched it and picked up her comment, rumoring it around…the indication being she’s loopy.
What they expected her to do is to disavow it.  Why so when her Church teaches it is a sin when generative powers are prevented from achieving their divinely intended purpose?  She has also stated long ago that masturbation equals adultery…and they made that another issue arguing she is loopy.
Her Catholic theology says this: Adultery is sexual congress between a married person and one to whom he/she is not married although both are mortal sins.   My guess is that there’s a spiritual calculator operating in heaven someplace that registers calibrations on mortal sin…and (this is me talking not the Church) masturbation does not rank as significant as adultery.   But the intention of Castle’s campaign is to use these moral issues to make it appear that Christine O’Donnell is loopy.
Now let’s consider Mike Castle, the GOPer who is saying Christine O’Donnell is loopy.
        This is his record:
In the U.S. House, 10-term incumbent Castle was one of 10 liberal GOP members to support Bill Clinton on most key issues working to water-down conservative positions on guns, tax cuts and education spending.  In 2007 when the Dems took over the House, Castle was one of only three Republicans to vote with the Dems on major liberal issues in Nancy Pelosi’s widely heralded “First 100 Hours” of the Democratic Congress…including
....hiking the minimum wage (which has dire affects on employment)…granting federal funding for research on embryonic stem cells (heedless of the life issue involved and despite the availability and better utility of adult stem cells merely because Planned Parenthood told them to)…pressuring drug companies to lower the cost of pharmaceuticals which worsened the Medicare deficit…cutting  interest rates on federalized student loans in half (adding to the deficit)…spending big bucks to “foster energy independence” (windmills).
Since then he voted to bail out financial markets which has prompted national outrage given the markets are back to normal and America continues jobless.  And you’re telling me that Castle’s primary opponent Christine O’Donnell is loopy because of her authentic Catholic views?  Give me a break.
Talk About Loopy: Meet Joe Biden!
Talk about loopy representing Delaware in the Senate…
… Delaware has just had a longtime liberal Democratic senator, a two-time presidential candidate—now our vice president—who serves in the second highest office in the land  despite two near-death brain aneurisms and who since his operation told Katie Couric (who nodded approvingly by the way showing how astute in history she is) that FDR soothed the nation talking on television after the Crash of `29…
…  One who even before the aneurisms appropriated in whole bio of Neil Kinnock of Wales, a British Laborite leader of parliament for himself without amendment…who said that he (Joe Biden) was the first of his family to go to college (as was Kinnock) but not Biden. Who got into a heated dispute on the stump about his high IQ.   The list of Biden’s errors are too long to list. He’s become a national joke including his fatuous proposal to divide Iraq into four equal parts like Gaul.
All this and we should worry about Christine O’Donnell?  What has she remotely done…or conceivably can do…that can rival Biden?  We should worry about her because like many Americans she’s had a tough time paying her bills?   Or that she has an authenticist opinion on masturbation? Or porno?
More tomorrow.  About Harry Reid who says that his Republican opponent, Sharron Angle, is also loopy.
Until then, give me your opinion.  If you lived in Delaware
would you vote for Christine O’Donnell or would you call her loopy? Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, atheists, agnostics invited.

Saint Peter Claver [1580-1654].  You know what? All this time I had thought he was a black man since his mission was to the impoverished slaves—but no, he was white, a Spanish Jesuit…born at Verdu, Catalonia, Spain to impoverished parents who descended from ancient and distinguished families.   While studying for the priesthood, he was influenced by St. Alphonsus Rodriguez to go to the Indies and minister to the black  slaves. In 1610 he landed at Cartagena, in Colombia, then the center of the flourishing slave market where a thousand slaves were landed every month.
He pledged himself to help them and his mission lasted 33 years. Once a ship landed he would rush to the hold and minister to them. While he taught them about the Church when they landed, he was also working feverishly to abolish the slave trade.  Through his efforts, 300,000 became Catholics.  He didn’t lose touch with his converts but followed them to plantations, convincing their masters to be compassionate and working all the time to abolish the horrid slave practice; He died in 1654.
